The above is my tagline for my coaching practice. I chose it because it concisely communicates what I do with my coaching clients in every session. But what does that really mean?
Both Art and Nature provide a place to deeply connect with our minds, spirits, and emotions. The act of creating art or being in Nature easily leads to a sense of time or spaciousness that allows us to look into ourselves and observe or express what is there. Art and Nature also give us creative, safe access to listen to our inner desires, story lines and frustrations.
In a coaching session, space is set aside to observe and connect in a different way (outside of daily routines) and I guide my clients to creatively focus on the outcomes, or goals, they are working towards. When clients work with me in the land, we take time to become aware of what is present: what is presenting itself as a prevalent theme or a curiosity in the moment? What do they notice about the landscape, what is important or coming into the forefront of their thoughts? During our conversation, we also keep in mind what the client has come to coaching for, ultimately their goals. Together we make mindful intentions and playful choices about how to proceed.
If a client is willing to investigate, I will suggest creative exercises to explore the topics and issues we have been delving into throughout the conversation. Sometimes an exercise involves creating art and other times it can be more of a physical engagement with an element of landscape. Examples of these could be: creating a drawing with visual elements of our discussion, building a meaningful sculpture with pine cones, sticks and art materials, or finding a cozy spot against a tree to deepen the experience of feeling supported.
Clients are always encouraged to add to these experiences and co-create them as they feel the pull of creative exploration. Together we weave these elements into a rich conversation to clarify and inform movement towards their goals and to create steps to reach them. Both Art and Nature show up in some surprising and uniquely meaningful ways.
The intentions, exercises and activity that are centered around making lasting change become transformative as clients experience and track themselves becoming their highest vision or meeting their goals. This process is inspiring to witness and, for me, it is an honor to be a part my client's deep process of change.
